Getting Closer to the Megaproject Problem
There are a lot of problems that need to be address in our society. But we can not wait for some one else to come and solve these issues. So, through Amal Academy I am able to serve my country and a whole world because we all are connected in one way or another.
Problem Statement
“Due to excessive use of plastic, marine life is in a huge risk and due to the burning of waste plastic material our air is getting polluted everyday”
Excessive use of plastic is harshly affecting the marine life as well as human life. Every year millions of marine animals died just because of plastic that people throw into the sea, river, lake etc. Fish, seabirds, sea turtles, and marine mammals can become entangled in or ingest plastic debris, causing suffocation, starvation, and drowning. Plastic waste kills up to a million seabirds a year. As with sea turtles, when seabirds ingest plastic, it takes up room in their stomachs, sometimes causing starvation.
Some Facts About Plastic
- Since the 1950s, almost 8.3 billion plastic has been produced. It has significantly doubled over the last 50 years.
- According to National Geographic, 73% litter and garbage found on beaches worldwide is plastic.
- Plastic bags are used for an average of 12 minutes.
- Around the world, nearly a million plastic beverage bottles are sold every minute.
- It takes 500 years or more for plastic to degrade, and even then it doesn’t completely dissolve but rather break down into tiny microparticles.
- Enough plastic is thrown away each year to circle the earth four times.
- One million sea birds and 100,000 marine mammals are killed annually from plastic in our oceans.
- 50% of the plastic that we use is single-use, which is then thrown away after one use.
- Up to 80 percent of ocean plastic pollution enters the ocean from land.
- One in three leatherback sea turtles have been found with plastic in their stomachs.
To decompose the waste material we burn it, but that waste material includes a lot of plastic materials in it, when plastic burns is produces air pollution which depletes the ozone layer and it causes the UV (ultra-violet rays) to reach on earth. These radiations causes hundreds of skin problems, the major one is skin cancer.
Solution
I choose to solve this problem because this one of the major problems that our world is facing now. I searched about this issue a lot and came to conclusion that this issue should be resolved by myself and my Amal Circle Team. I also discussed this issue with my fellows and they appreciated me for working on this issue.
STEPS
- I decided to start this process by targeting a niche of shop keepers.
- I will aware them about this issue and predisposed them to buy fabricated bags instead of plastic bags.
- I will search and approach to recycle centers for the recycling of plastic.
I learnt many things good things from this project, but especially this, that there is no one going to save us but ourselves. So, if we see any problem we should get into it in order to solve that problem. Amal values really helped me doing this project.
